Tattoo Etiquette: The Dos and Don'ts for Clients

Getting a tattoo is an exciting process, but it is important to remember that it’s also a collaborative experience between you and your artist. Respecting tattoo etiquette ensures a smooth and successful journey, allowing for your artist to do their best work. Whether it is your first tattoo or you are adding to your collection, here are some dos and don'ts to follow.

Dos

Do Your Research

Before booking an appointment, research the tattoo shop and artist that you want to work with to ensure their style lines up with your vision. Take some time to look through their portfolio to ensure their experience aligns with the design that you want.

Arrive on Time

Tattoo artists' work on a schedule, so be mindful of that and arrive on time. If you do need to reschedule, be sure to give your artist a heads up ahead of time.

Hygiene

Make sure that you are clean before your appointment. Showering and wearing clean clothes is common courtesy, as your artist will be working in close proximity to your skin.

Eat Before Your Appointment

Tattoos can take time, especially for bigger pieces. Eating beforehand helps you maintain your energy and reduce the chances of feeling lightheaded.

Communication

Do not be afraid to discuss your ideas, placement, and any concerns with your artist before they begin. Being open about your expectations ensures a better outcome.

Aftercare Instructions

Once your tattoo is done, your artist will provide you with clear instructions. Be sure to follow them carefully to promote healing and maintain the quality of your tattoo.

Don’ts

Do Not Haggle Pricing

Tattoos are an investment, and good work comes at a cost. Asking for a discount can come across as disrespectful to the artist’s skill and time.

Do Not Show Up Intoxicated

Acholo and drugs thin your blood and can affect your ability to sit still for your artist. Additionally, being under the influence can make you an uncooperative client.

Do Not Bring a Large Group with You

While it is ok and often recommended to bring moral support with you, bringing too many people can cause a distraction to your artist and even disrupt the shop.

Do Not Moving

Tattooing requires precision, so sudden movements can cause mistakes. If you are in need of a break or time to adjust, simply just let your artist know.

Do Not Micro-Manage

While it is good to have input, constantly questioning or trying to control the process can be frustrating for the artist. Trust their expertise!

Do Not Touch Your Fresh Tattoo

It may be tempting to touch your brand new tattoo, but it can introduce bacteria and cause infection. Keep it clean and let it heal properly.
