The History Of Tattoos

Humans have been marking their skin for thousands of years. From all around the world from different cultures. Each comes with different meanings and significance. In a recent study around 32 percent of the world population have tattoos. For many, they like the idea of tattoos to boost their physical appearance.

How Did Tattoos Make It To The Western World?

Tattoos made their impact in the Western world thanks to the impact of religion. More specifically Christianity, as they were somewhat a common form of self-expression. Tattoos made their way into America due to a German man named Martin Hildebrandt. He opened his first parlor in New York City back in the mid-1800s. Much of his work has sadly been lost in history, so there is no real images of what his pieces consisted of.

Early 20th Century Tattoos

In the early 1900s tattoos were used to describe professions, community, and history.  During these times tattoos were most commonly found in the sailor and circus communities. Back in the day sailors would tattoo newcomers to indicate and welcome them on board. It was even common sometimes for sailors to have destinations tattooed on them to show off where they had traveled to.

Women were even getting tattoos during these times, just not in the same way. The big rage for women back in the 1920s was to get cosmetic tattoos. This could come in the form of lip liner, and eyebrows. During these times tattoos were still not widely accepted, so women often did their best to hide them.

There was a shift in the mid-1900s as World War 2 was under place and many started to get patriotic and military tattoos. This is when the shift of acceptance started to take place. Tattoos also were very much associated with masculinity back then due to the times.
